Set in Rome in 1800, when Napoleon was beating the Austrians on the battlefield, it is a work of great intensity, containing sublime moments such as the scene Te Deum at the end of the first act to commemorate the supposed defeat of the French emperor and the aria E lucevan le stelle.
The plot is based on the vicissitudes of the escape of Angelotti, former consul of the Republic of Rome, and the characters of his painter friend Mario Cavaradossi, who takes him in and gives him refuge, and of the main protagonist, Floria Tosca, with whom the painter is in love.
who takes him in and gives him refuge and the main character, Floria Tosca, with whom the painter is in love, a girl, at first carefree and frivolous, but with a role that will grow as the play progresses, becoming the true heroine of the story. The other main character is Scarpia, the sadistic and sinister chief of the police of Rome, who wants to seduce Tosca by any means, and does not hesitate to use his position to do so, threatening to execute Cavaradossi, if he does not give in to his pretensions. She, filled with rage, stabs him with a knife and kills him. Desperate for what she has just done and believing, moreover, that her lover has been executed, she climbs a tower of the wall and throws herself down. In short, a tragic melodrama set in a suffocating atmosphere of doubts, suspicions and falsehoods.
