WHO IS EL BARRIO?
There are musicians who don’t just write songs—they create something that gets under your skin and stays there. El Barrio is one of them. Flamenco, rock, rumba, blues, and a whole lot of heart: that’s the sound of one of the most authentic and true-to-itself bands Spanish music has ever produced.
And here at CaixaBank Tarraco Arena, we know this all too well, because we've already seen them live not once, but twice.
The Beginnings: From Jerez to the Heart of Spain
El Barrio was born in Jerez de la Frontera, and you can hear it in every note he plays. At the helm of the group is José Luis Figueroa, “El Barrio, ” an artist who has been developing his own unique sound since the 1990s—a sound that defies easy categorization but is instantly recognizable from the very first bars.
His music blends the most authentic flamenco with influences from rock and Anglo-Saxon blues, creating a fusion that resonates with people of all ages. There is something about his music that feels raw, genuine, and rooted in real life.
A catalog that speaks for itself
With more than ten studio albums to his credit, he has built a solid career without ever pandering to the mainstream. El Barrio has built his audience organically, through live performances and songs that people have made their own.
Some of his most beloved songs are:
- “How Beautiful” — One of their most iconic and frequently played songs.
- “La llave” — Pure flamenco passion with plenty of flair.
- “Love of Buying and Selling” — Rock and flamenco in perfect harmony.
- “Señor” — A ballad that reveals his most intimate and powerful side.
- “You’ve got me hooked” — Rhythm, charm, and tons of energy live on stage.
It is precisely in their live performances that El Barrio truly shines. They are one of those bands that outshine any studio recording when they're on stage.
El Barrio and Tarragona: A Story of Two Encounters
At the CaixaBank Tarraco Arena, we have had the privilege of hosting El Barrio on two occasions that have left a lasting impression on the people of Tarragona.
The first was in 2018, with the tour for “Las costuras del alma, ” one of her most acclaimed albums. It was a night of flamenco and emotion that filled the venue with pure energy.
The second one came in 2024, with the Gira Atemporal tour, confirming that El Barrio and Tarragona share a special bond. The audience responded as always: with total enthusiasm, singing along to every song, giving it their all.
An artist who doesn't follow trends
What makes El Barrio special is its consistency. In an industry that changes its sound every season, this band from Jerez has been doing the same thing for decades: honest, unpretentious music, full of charm and authenticity.
That’s what connects a teenager with his grandfather in front of the same stage. That’s what makes his concerts always a shared experience.
