The Concurs de Castells de Tarragona is a contest held every two years in the San Miguel Tarraco Arena. San Miguel Tarraco Arena. Currently the contest takes place on the Sunday of the first weekend of October of even years. The rules of the contest of castles of Tarragona determine a specific score for the castles, depending on their difficulty.

Loaded castles score less than unloaded castles, and penalty points are deducted for different concepts. The sum of the three best castles of different structures determines a final ranking, according to which the groups receive cash prizes and a cup for the winner. A jury ensures that the rules of the competition are correctly applied. The numerical weighting of the difficulty of the castles, the differences between one structure and another and the greater or lesser difference in score between a loaded or unloaded castle generate a recurring controversy in each edition.

The first edition was held in 1932 and was repeated in 1933, but it did not continue until 1952, after which three uninterrupted competitions were held every two years. In 1970 and 1972 competitions were held again in Tarragona, but it was not until 1980 that it was fully consolidated, being held without interruption until the present day.
